Solid IO and Ymmunobio collaborate on cancer drug testing

October 21, 2026

We're excited to announce a new research collaboration with Ymmunobio, a Swiss oncology biotech company developing first-in-class targeted therapies for solid tumors. Through this collaboration, Ymmunobio will use Solid IO's ex vivo tumor-on-chip platform to evaluate the response of patient-derived tumor tissue to an investigational cancer therapy.

Bringing human biology into preclinical drug development

‍

One of the key challenges in oncology drug development is understanding how promising therapies perform in the complex biological environment of human tumors. Bringing a new cancer drug to approval can take around nine years, and more than half of phase 3 oncology trials fail to meet their primary endpoint. One reason is that conventional preclinical models, such as cell lines and animal models, do not fully capture the complexity of human tumors, so promising results often fail to translate to patients. For biotech companies, the challenge is especially acute: they are expected to generate strong, human-relevant evidence early, often with limited time and resources, to prioritize the right drug candidates and indications. At the same time, regulators are increasingly encouraging human-based New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), with the FDA accelerating their adoption and the European Commission advancing its 3Rs strategy to replace, reduce and refine animal testing.

Testing therapies in living human tumor tissue

‍

Solid IO's platform preserves the intact tumor-immune microenvironmentof living, patient-derived tumor tissue, including native tissue architecture. This enables direct functional testing of drug responses in a biologically relevant setting. For Ymmunobio, the collaboration offers an opportunity to generate additional functional insights into its investigational therapy, complement existing preclinical data and support informed decisions throughout drug development.

‍

"Understanding how our therapies perform in human tumor tissue is highly valuable as we advance our oncology pipeline. Through this collaboration with Solid IO, we aim to gain functional insights faster and morecost-effectively, complementing our existing preclinical data and helping guide our development decisions."

Peter Schiemann, CEO, Ymmunobio

‍

"Our goal is to help drug developers make better decisions by bringing human biology into preclinical testing. We're excited to collaborate with Ymmunobio and demonstrate how our platform can provide meaningful insights into the activity of investigational cancer therapies."

Noora Hujala, CEO, Solid IO

This collaboration marks an important milestone for Solid IOas we further develop and validate our platform in oncology drug development. Together with Ymmunobio, we share the vision of a new generation of precise, targeted cancer therapies. By generating human-relevant functional data early in development, we aim to help bring these therapies to patients faster.
